Lawrence Nelson Astley was born November 5, 1927, the second of four children to Harry B. and Lida Velma (Frickel) Astley. At thirteen months old, little Lawrence accidentally fell into a pan of scalding water, and he died from the injuries four days after Christmas in 1928. Stricken with grief, there is little doubt that Lida and Harry drew inner strength in this crisis from family, neighbors, and their faith in a sovereign God.
