VERA R. ABNEY, 94, of Duncan, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2006, in Aurora, Colorado.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Eastside Church of Christ with Ron Stough officiating. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Fairlawn Cemetery, Elk City, under direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home of Duncan.
Vera Richards was born April 22, 1911, in Seminole. While at Maud High School, she was a star forward on the girls' basketball team, and won a statewide typing speed competition.
She married Bruce Abney in 1933 and they had two sons, Richard 'Foreman' Abney and Conley 'Kay' Abney. During the Depression, Vera and her family moved to the west Texas town of Muleshoe.
After World War II, they moved to Parsons, Kan., and opened a small neighborhood food market. Bruce was the butcher/meat cutter and Vera handled just about everything else. Many times, they provided food to families who couldn't buy it. "You could buy a loaf of bread for a nickel - if you had the nickel," Vera once said.
In 1952, their daughter Gail was born. Three years later, the family spent time in Jacksonville, Fla., before settling in Duncan in 1957. After Bruce died of cancer in 1963, Vera went to work as an inventory control clerk for Abbie's, a ladies' clothing store in Ward Mall. She worked for Abbie's founder, Abbie, and her son Gene Dare, for more than 25 years, and was once named "Employee of the Month" by the Duncan Chamber of Commerce. She retired in 1987.
Over the years, Vera crocheted many colorful afghans for friends and for her six grand-children. Vera was an active member of Eastside Church of Christ for 48 years and encouraged others with a cheerful smile and with cards and letters. For nearly two years, she lived at Duncan Plaza and traveled frequently to visit family in Oklahoma, Missouri and Colorado.
She is survived by her daughter, Gail Abney Carissimi, and son-in-law, Jon Carissimi, of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Leota Denton of Noel, Mo.; six grandchildren, Donna Aldridge, Jeff Abney and wife Cindy of Elk City, Doug Abney of Oklahoma City, Sheila Ramsey and husband Steve, and Joe Abney of Parsons, Kan., and Lu Carson of Hutchinson, Kan.; a great-grandson, Ricky Aldridge; and daughter-in-law, Aggie Abney, both of Elk City; and several other great-grandchildren.
