Mrs. Abner was a 1942 honors graduate of Wagoner High School, who attended Oklahoma A & M College (OSU) where she majored in music. After one year at OSU, Tommy Lou applied for a provisionary teaching certificate and returned to Wagoner where she took control of the school's band program.Tommy Lou met J. Ralph Abner, when he came to Wagoner to set up the Federated Store in 1946; they were married on January 12, 1947. Shortly thereafter, the couple moved to Lebanon, Kentucky, where Ralph opened Abner's Shoes. Throughout this time, Tommy Lou continued to pursue her education at Nazareth College and was the organist at the Presbyterian Church. After she received her teaching certificate, she taught music at various schools in the Lebanon area including vocal music at Lebanon High School. After her husband's death in 1965, Tommy Lou and her children relocated to her hometown of Wagoner where she taught vocal music for a year at West Jr. High in Muskogee before getting a chance to teach band again at her alma mater. When given the opportunity to teach vocal music in Wagoner, Tommy accepted the challenge and consistently produced award-winning choral groups until her retirement in 1985.
