Walter S. Cook, 70, Dies at His Home; Services Thursday

Walter S. Cook, rural mail carrier for more than a third of a century, died at his home, 406 East Second street at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday after an illness of five years.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Methodist church with Rev. Brodace Elkins, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are in charge of the Pitcher Funeral home and burial will be in Elmwood cemetery at Sedan. Rural carriers of Mountain View and Carnegie will be bearers.

Born in Stewartsville, Mo., Oct. 26, 1880, the son of a Baptist preacher, Cook grew up in Enid where his father built the first Baptist church.

He was married to May Isabelle Kern Aug. 26, 1900, in Enid. They came to Kiowa county in 1901 and located south of Mountain View.

Cook started carrying the mail March 16, 1909 and retired Nov. 7, 1945, serving a period of 36 years, 9 months and 15 days. For about 25 years he carried the Sedan-Saddle Mountain route. He was a carrier out of Mountain View about a year before he accepted a route at Bison where he spent his last 10 years in the service.

He moved to Enid in April, 1946 and two years later bought his present home in Carnegie and moved here.

Always active in rural carrier organizations. Cook served several years as county president and was a delegate to the state convention for many years. Upon his retirement, his fellow carriers gave a banquet in his honor which was attended by 350 persons. He was a member of the Methodist church of Sedan.

Survivors are the wife, Mrs. May Cook; a son, Stafford Cook of south of Carnegie; a daughter, Miss Ruth Lela Cook of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Lester Goddard of Enid; Mrs. Fred Van Hoozer, Duncan; and Mrs. grace Mathews of Garden City, Kan.; a brother, Ernest Cook, Tulsa, and two grandchildren.
