According to Suzanna's daughter, Nettie, the family took part in the 1889 Oklahoma land run. Noble County records, however, indicate that the land run was in April and the Applebys arrived about six months later. In any event, their first home was dug out of the prairie dirt. It was in this crude home that 23-year-old Suzanna became ill and died, leaving three daughters, ages two, four and six. This information came from Nettie Ophelia Appleby, Lyford Hale's grandmother.

Keep in mind that the land run was in April and Suzanna gave birth to Nettie in September of 1889, only five months later. Whether the family was in the land run or came six months after it, the move to a prairie dugout had to be brutal on Suzanna and her baby. Grandma Nettie survived. Suzanna did not; she died late in 1891.
