John Samuel Balden was b. Iowa, the son of William Ambrose Balden and Emily Guyll. His father known as Ambrose or Willie, was born in MO and his mother Emily was born in Taylor Co., Iowa, just about 15 miles over the boarder. Emily's parents, Jesse and Martha Elizabeth Hindman-Guyll, were some of the earliest settlers of Taylor Co., IA.

William and Emily's graves have not been located yet. William's father, Cannada Balden a CW vet (23rd MO Vol Inf) is in an unmarked grave at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City, Ford Co., KS but the location of Louisa his wife is unknown.

John Samuel Balden's sister Sarah Elizabeth Balden-Hamilton was b. 23 Feb 1871 in Cherryvale, Montgomery Co., KS. Perhaps her mother died in childbirth?

John and his sister Sarah Elizabeth spent much of their earrly years in KS. By 1880 the Barton Co., KS census shows John and Sarah living with their grand parents, Cannada and Louisa Wells Balden and no mention of their parents.

John used to work for the railroad and his wife Maud used to cook for the rail crew and others.
