Mavis Eleanor (Eisenbraun) Svoboda was born May 1, 1934 , south of Colome at the farm home of her parents Adolph and Bertha (Steinke) Eisenbraun. Mavis and her two older sisters Irene and Viola, attended Grandview School while growing up on the farm. They attended Colome High School where Mavis lived in the school dormitory and worked at the Gamble Store. Mavis graduated from high school in May of 1953.
On November 8th of 1953 she married Franklin Svoboda and they raised their family of two girls and two boys northwest of Dixon. Mavis was the typical farm wife, gardening, canning, raising chickens and helping with the chores. She and Franklin were members of the Hamill ZCBJ and on Saturdays they would be at the Hamill Hall for the dances. They loved playing cards with the neighbors and going to dances. Mavis was very supportive and proud of her children and grandchildren in all their activities. Mavis was a long time member of the Colome American Legion Auxillary, involved in the American Ag movement, honorary Jaycee, and honorary JCI senator. Mavis was enjoyed being involved with the Oscar Micheaux Festival. She was looking forward to being in the Micheaux film. In her earlier years she was also a dealer for Tri-Chem paints and later began selling Watkins products.
Franklin died in March of 1994 and Mavis continued to live on the farm with her sons, Don and Dave. On November 29, 2010 she suffered a stroke and was in poor health until her death on January 31, 2011 at the age of 76 years.
She is survived by her four children: Diane Svoboda of Gregory - Carol and husband Don Petersen of rural Gregory - Don of Winner, SD and Dave on the farm; and by three grandchildren: Donnie Petersen, Kathy (Chad Hanrahan) Petersen, and Melissa Petersen all of Gregory and one sister, Viola Zeller of Gregory. Also surviving are her brothers-in-law Vince (Linda) Svoboda, Marvin (Jan) Christensen, Melvin (Carol) Christensen, Don (Dorothy) Christensen and, Joann Songer and also by nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her husband, two infant sons, her parents, a sister Irene, brother-in-laws Reuben Zeller and Bob Kapicka, nephew Larry Kapicka, and infant Zeller and other family and friends.
Funeral services for Mavis Svoboda, 76, of Dixon were held on Friday, February 4, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the Berean Fundamental Church in Gregory, SD with Pastor Scott McClellen officiating. A prayer service was held Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at Kotrba Funeral Home in Gregory, SD.
Music was provided by Geoff Smith "On the Wings of a Dove," Jim Halverson "You Are My Sunshine," accompanied by Janeen Hlavka, pianist and also a recorded selection "Holes in the Floor of Heaven."
Lynn Zeller, Sharon Zeller, and Marlene Cousins were in charge of registration. Flower attendants were Amy Meinen, Jami Svoboda, and Becky Odenbach.
Casket bearers were Leroy Songer, Bill Petersen, Tim Talsma, Bob Petersen, Keith Talsma, Randy Steinke, Brent Preslicka, and Duane Welker.
Honorary casketbearers were Dean Meinen, Dave Meinen, Bill Salmon, Ormal Zeller, Terry Cousins, Bart Svoboda, and her family & friends.
Honored guests were Velma Harmacek, Carolyn Vedral, and Clara Belle Pavlis.
Interment was in the Bohemian National Cemetery, Gregory, SD.
