Joseph H. Abeln, 86, Rapid City, died Saturday, April 1, 2000, at Fairmont Grand Manor in Rapid City.
Joe was born in Ethan on April 6, 1913. He moved with his family to the Rochford area in the 1930's. They moved in 1938 to Rapid City, where Joe had continued to live. He served in the US Navy from 1941 to 1945 in the Pacific Theatre. Joe worked at Ellsworth Air Force Base in the Civil Service until he retired in the late 1960's.
Joe was a longtime member of the VFW and the Ham Radio Club of the Black Hills. He was also a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Joe enjoyed music and dancing, and spent many hours at the senior centers in Rapid City.
He is survived by two brothers, Francis Abeln and his wife, Eleanor, of Oregon; and Leonard Abeln and his wife, Camille, of Sturgis, SD; three sisters, Josephine Byre, Oacoma, Lorraine Aalseth and her husband, Earl, Billings, MT, and Rosalie Wheeler and her husband, Charles, Rapid City; numerous nieces and nephews; and grandnieces and grandnephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma Abeln; two brothers, Vincent and Marcus Abeln; and two sisters, Margarette Hanford and Agatha Briggs.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Hospice of the Black Hills, or to a charitable organization of the sender's choice in Joe's name.
A rosary will be held at the Mother's Chapel at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, at the cathedral, with Monsignor Michael Woster officiating. Burial will be at Bell Park Cemetery near Rochford, SD.
Funeral arrangements are with Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Home in Rapid City.
