Helen Aarstad, age 101, of Brookings, died Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings.
Helen Delphine Aarstad was born February 27, 1910, to Eugene Joseph and Marcie Delphine (Villemey) Dupraz in Somonsuk, Illinois. She came to a farm north of Aurora, South Dakota, March 28,1910, that her father bought the year before.

Helen attended country school at Fountain, South Dakota, and graduated from Brookings High School. She attended teacher's colleges at Madison and Spearfish, South Dakota. She then taught rural schools in Deuel and Brookings counties.

On March 17, 1936, Helen wed S.J. "Happy" Aarstad in Brookings. The couple lived on a farm southwest of Brookings and then moved to a farm near Aurora, South Dakota, in 1945. They moved into Brookings in May of 1993. S.J. died August 17, 1993.

Helen was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings. She was a sixty years plus member of the Extension Club. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting and tatting hundreds of articles for her children, grand children, and friends.

Helen is survived by three daughters: Fern Marshall of Colorado Springs, Colorado: Carol Ann Klug of Brookings, South Dakota; and Helen Jean Lewis of Frisco, Texas; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Her parents; her husband; two brothers, Henry and Edward; and a half-sister, Marie.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Brookings, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Brookings. Visitations will precede the services at the church.

Somonauk is a village in DeKalb County and LaSalle counties in the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 1295 at the 2000 census. A special census in 2008 ..
