Madeline I. Baarda

Madeline Baarda, 97 of Lynnville passed away April 4, 2008 at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M. Tuesday April 8, 2008 at the Lynnville Friends Church in Lynnville with Pastor Doug Smiley officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Lynnville Friends Church or the Grinnell Hospice.
Madeline I. Baarda, daughter of William and Hester (Shaffer) Sparks was born March 4, 1911 in Lynnville. She lived in Lynnville all of her life and attended Lynnville High School. Madeline married Charlie Elscott on June 12, 1929 in Marshalltown. He preceded her in death on July 24, 1967. A homemaker for most of her life, she was the first librarian at the Lynnville Library. Madeline worked as a cook for the Lynnville School Cafeteria while retiring in 1973. She married Joe Baarda on November 24, 1973 in Newton. He preceded her in death in 1986. Madeline was a devoted Christian while attending the Lynnville Friends Church where she folded folders for several years. Madeline enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, cooking and visiting with family and friends.
Her memory is honored by several nieces and nephews and special friends, Carna DeJong & family.
Madeline was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Charlie Elscott and Joe Baarda; two brothers, Rosco and Dwight Sparks; and five sisters, Neta Pothoven, Zola Savage, Mamie Christenson, Gayle Hanson and Colene Needham.
