Services for Charles J. Arlen, 85, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of 19482 Clear Creek Road, New Vienna, Iowa, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Luxemburg, Iowa, with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Farley, Iowa. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at Gene Siegert & Son Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a scripture wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Arlen farmed most of his life in the Graf area, retiring in 1973.

He was born on Oct. 19, 1911, in Farley, son of John and Anna (Kofmehl) Arlen. He died at 11:10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997, at the care center.

He married Geneva C. Schmitt on May 29, 1939.

He loved to travel, spend time with his family and enjoyed playing cards.

Surviving are five sons, John (Dana) Arlen, of Wilton, Iowa, Richard (Caroline) Arlen, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Darwin "Casey" (Becky) Arlen, of Hartford, N.Y., Charles Jr. (Julie) Arlen, of New Vienna, and Russell (Karen) Arlen, of Bernard, Iowa; 10 daughters, Rosene (Frank) Moreland, of Dubuque, Marlene (Glenn) Stoner, of Charlottesville, Va., Marilyn "Jayne" (Gerry) Houtakker, of Cuba City, Wis., Connie (Allan) Connolly, and Cindy (Bob) Bartels, both of Dubuque, Julie (Bill) Ament, of Epworth, Iowa, Denise McNatt, of Seattle, Wash., Chris (Bruce) Dokkebakken, of Big Lake, Minn., Audrey (Greg) Zankle, of Woodstock, Ill., and Mary Arlen, of Davenport, Iowa; 43 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; a brother, Clarence Arlen, of Dubuque; and two sisters, Marie Schmitt, of Sherrill, Iowa, and Eda (Francis) Schultz, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Rita Breitbach.

Memorials may be given to Stonehill Care Center.
