Mr. Jerry Alpers was born on Saturday; January 3, 1925 in Saint Louis; Saint Louis County, Missouri. He was the son of C.L. and Dorothy (Wissmann) Alpers. He was raised and educated in Fonda; Pocahontas County, Iowa where he attended the Fonda school system. Jerry actively served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Navy. Following his honorable discharge Jerry returned home and was united in marriage to Mildred Mack on Sunday; June 26, 1949. Throughout his lifetime Jerry was a master carpenter and craftsman building fine cabinetry for several banks and theaters. Jerry and his family moved to Marshalltown in 1975. Jerry was lead carpenter for the Iowa Veterans Home for over 15 years until his retirement in 1990. Jerry enjoyed woodworking and traveling but most of all was devoted to his family. Jerry was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church and a past member of the American Legion Frank-Lewis-Glick Post # 46. Mr. Jerry Alpers, 79, passed away on Monday; March 22, 2004 in Marshalltown; Marshall County, Iowa. Those left to mourn his passing are his loving wife Mildred Alpers of Marshalltown; Marshall County, Iowa. His daughter Helen (John) August of Marshalltown, his daughter Tammy Alpers of Starke; Bradford County, Florida. His sister Irene Chase of Saint Louis; Saint Louis County, Missori. His brother Gilbert (Jan) Alpers of Fonda; Pocahontas County, Iowa. His sister Ruth (Bud) Garton of Albert City; Buena Vista County, Iowa. His six granchildren: Jason and his wife Jennifer, Heidi, Trevor, Drew, Ashley, and Christopher. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson-in-law Mark Mann. May they rest in peace. Visitation will be held on Friday; March 26, 2004 from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at the Redeemer Lutheran Church. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday; March 26, 2004 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Marshalltown with Reverend Daniel Johnson officiating. Following services he will be laid to rest at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Marshalltown; Marshall County, Iowa.
