Abe Brinkhuis was born in the Netherlands January 9, 1877, and passed away at his home in Rock valley January 10, 1954. Death was due to a heart condition.
He came with his parents to the United States when he was four years old, and was married to Hermina Hofmeyer, September 3, 1903. She preceded him in death, July 28, 1917. To this union one daughter, Geraldine (Mrs. Arnold Van Roekel) of Alvord was born.
He was married to Hattie Dorsman, January 4, 1922. To this union five children were born who, with their mother, survive: Gladys (Mrs. Harry Terpstra), Hudson, S.D.; Hermina (Mrs. John Sandbulte) of Carmel; Abraham, Jr. of Sioux Falls; Mary (Mrs. Richard Van Surksum), of Carmel; James, who attends Central College at Pella, and 13 grandchildren.
Mr. Brinkhuis is survived by one sister, Mrs. P.D. Grootes of Twin Falls, Idaho. One sister, Mrs. John Zordrager of Sheldon, died the following day. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, two brothers, and two grandchildren.
His earlier years were spent at Newkirk, where he was a blacksmith by trade. He and his family moved to Rock Valley in 1927 where he has since been engaged in farming. He was a member of the First Reformed Church.
Funeral services for Abe Brinkhuis were held at the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley this weeks, with Rev. A.A. Dykstra officiating. Burial was made at the Newkirk Cemetery, beside his first wife. Pallbearers were Ed Kooima, Ted Kooima, Luke Van Berkum, Dick Ver Doorn, Will Wissink and John Vander Sanden.
