Bertha Brink, 78, of Hospers died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, at Orange City Municipal Hospital in Orange City, Iowa.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Reformed Church in Hospers, with the Rev. Milton Sikkema officiating. Burial will be prior to the service Thursday in Hospers Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 10 a.m. Thursday at Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Bertha was born Aug. 3, 1925, in Hospers, the daughter of Edward and Carrie (Top) Zwagerman. She was raised in Hospers, where she attended the Christian school.

On July 19, 1946, she married Clifford E. Brink in Hospers. They made their home in Hospers, where she was a homemaker and worked in several cafes and grocery stores.

She was an active member of First Reformed Church, where she participated in the women's activities. She also belonged to the American Legion Reuter Post Auxiliary and served on the Community Chest committee, both in Hospers.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially the grandchildren, and visiting with her many friends. She also liked to do quilting, counted cross-stitching, growing flowers and fishing.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Cliff; three children, Harvey Brink of Milford, Kan., Sheryl and her husband, the Rev. Brad Carloss of Cornell, Wis., and Carla and her husband, Bill Schumacher of Bellaire, Texas; five grandchildren, Michele Grotenhuis of Troy, Ala., Erik Grotenhuis of Kansas City, Mo., James Grotenhuis and his wife, Tracey of Yankton, S.D., Heather Schumacher of San Antonio, Texas, and Sara Schumacher of Austin, Texas; two stepgrandchildren, Jordan and Katherine Carloss of Eagle Grove, Iowa; and nephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Pete Zwagerman; and a sister, Winifred Vaas Langstraat.

Memorials may be directed to the Gideon's, Bible League to purchase Bibles or Hospice.
