He grew up in Jefferson, Iowa and attended school through the ninth grade.
On November 7, 1938, Royal was married to Adeline Stumpt. Three children were born to this union. After their marriage, the couple farmed near Lakefield, Minnesota.
During WWII, Royal served in the U.S. Army and served in Europe. After his discharge, he returned to farming in Minnesota and in 1953, the couple moved back to Greene County. They farmed until 1975 when they moved into Jefferson.
Royal worked several years at Ideal Manufacturing. For the past year and an half, Royal and Adeline made their home at Regency Park Care Center.
Royal was 94 when he passed away on January 23, 2013 at the Regency Park Care Center in Jefferson.
In accordance with his wishes, no services were held. A graveside service will take place at a later date at the Highland Township Cemetery in Churdan. The Brown Funeral Home of Jefferson was in charge of arrangements.
Royal is survived by his wife of 74 years, three children; Robert Anderson and Shirley Franey, both of Jefferson and Dennis of Davenport, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and four sisters.
