John Meeker fought in the Civil War with the 11th Iowa Infantry. He took part in the Battle for Atlanta and Sherman's march to the sea through Georgia.

His brother William recorded in his diary that "brother Warren suffered a sun stroke during the battle of Atlanta".
But he survived and went on with General Sherman (probably to the end of the war).
