Iona was the eldest of three children born to Joseph Jefferson and Zetella Amelia Watkins Switzer. Her siblings from this marriage were Albert Pierce and Essie Joelma Switzer. Her two older half siblings from Joseph's first marriage to Frances Reeder were Maude and Harry Switzer.

Iona married Walter Thorne Baker Nov. 15, 1908 at the Switzer family home,near Admire, Lyon Co., KS. Walter and Iona had 10 children: Walter George, Marthella, William Joseph, Loralee, Julia Grace, Walter Ray, Dorothy, Lynn Leroy, Kathryn and Robert Harold.

Obituary Pearl Baker

Iona Pearl, daughter of Joseph Jefferson and Zetella Watkins Switzer, was born near Reading, Kansas, June 8, 1888. She departed this life at the Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital, WaKeeney, Kansas, on October 9, 1981, having attained the age of 93 years, 4 months and 1 day.

Pearl grew up in Northern Lyon County where the family was affiliated with the Ivy Community Church. She later transferred her membership to the Presbyterian Church at WaKeeney. She was also a member of Rebekahs and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

On November 15, 1908, Pearl and Walter Thorne Baker were united in marriage at the Switzer family home in Lyon County. To this union were born 5 sons and 5 daughters.

Preceding her in death were her husband, two sons -- Walter George and William Joseph, a daughter -- Marthella Oldham, a grandson -- Walter Carl Manz, her parents, two brothers, and one sister. She is survived by her children -- Loralee of WaKeeney, Julia Grace (Judy) Small and husband Clyde of Wichita, Willis Ray and wife Marian of Quinter, Dorothy Manz and husband Carl of Ottawa, Illinois, Lynn LeRoy and wife Marjorie of Salina, Kathryn Berry and husband Howard of Valley Center, Robert Harold and wife Shirley of Dighton, 20 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. J. E. (Essie) Shafer of Osage City, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Following funeral services conducted at the Hendricks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Floyd Starr officiating, Pearl was laid to rest in the WaKeeney Cemetery on Monday, Oct. 12.
