From: Sylvia Sun 17 Jan 1918, p. 1, col. 1.

Joseph L. Ball, senior county commissioner and chairman of the board died at his home in Hutchinson last Thursday morning after a long illness.

"Joe" Ball, as he w as known all over the county numbered his friends by his acquaintenances and was absolutely fair and square in all his dealings. He was recognized as an authority on land values in the county.

He was a most loyal friend and when he considered a thing to be right he valiantly stood for it whether it was popular measure or not.

Joseph L. Ball was born in 1851 in Boone county, Ind., one of a family of 12 children. He was left an orphan at the early age of 8 years. When 13 years of age he went to Illinois where he contracted to stay with a farmer until of age.

In 1873 he was marrried to Sarah Belle Willhoite and to the union four children were born, the widow and three daughters surviving.

In 1884 Mr. Ball and his family came to Kansas, settling on a ranch near Sylvia in this county. Here he acted as manager of the ranch now owned by Henry S. Thompson.

Mr. Ball used to herd cattle on the town site of Sylvia. In the early 90s he moved his family to Hutchinson and was a salesman for the Hutchinson Hardware and Implement Col for several years. Later he became the manager of the real estate department of the Fontron Realty Co. and held that position until he entered the realty business himself and was a member of the Shiney-Ball Real Estate Co. at the time of his death.

The funeral services were held at his home last Friday afternoon, conducted by Dr. Frank Neff pastor of the First Methodist church and the next morning the body was shipped to Sylvia for burial in the I.O.O.F. cemetery, where Rev. W. B. Stevens conducted the services.
