Served in the Civil War on the Union side. Arthur enlisted in the 2nd New York Mounted Cavalry at Buffalo, NY on January 6, 1864. He attained the rank of private, and was discharged following the end of the war on August 9, 1865 at Louisville, KY. He went on to become a farmer in Kansas; married and was a widower when he was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Leavenworth, KS in 1920.
