Demise Of A Venerable Citizen
Mr. James Lawrence Culver, a pioneer settler of Osborne County, Kansas, died Thursday evening, May 16, 1895, at the home of his daughter Mrs. Wm. Clemmons, in Valley Township. Mr. Culver was aged 75 years, 8 months, 20 days. The deceased had been afflicted with a cancer in his face for about 3 years and last winter went to Topeka for treatment, but the efforts of specialists afforded him no relief. At times he suffered intense pain, but bore his troubles uncomplainingly. Mr. Culver was a native of New York and in 1872 came from that state to Kansas, homesteading a farm in Victor Township, this county, where he resided continuously up to within a few months of his death. He was a gentleman of high honor and unquestioned integrity. To know him was to be his everlasting friend. He was a power for good in his community and his death will be keenly felt by a large, devoted circle of friends. An aged wife, two daughters and a son survive him. One daughter, Mrs. Clemmons, resides in this county. The other, Mrs. Ella Nichols, lives in Baker City, Oregon. Arthur F. Culver, the son, is now a resident of Meriden, this state. Funeral services were held at 12 o'clock last Saturday at the Baptist Church in Covert Township, the discourse being delivered by Rev. H.S. Christian. The funeral was largely attended by his fellow citizens, who had held him in high esteem, for more than a score of years. The remains were consigned to their last resting place in the little cemetery on Mr. Culver's own farm near Covert.
