Sandra "Sandy" Baer of Winchester on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at the age of 64.
She was the beloved wife of Barry Kahn, and devoted mother to Jesse Baerkahn & his wife Ronni, and Liza Baerkahn Shirazi & her husband Joshua. She was the only sister of Joanne Seblatnigg.
Sandy was born in Milwaukee, WI to the late Louis and Margot Baer.
Her parents met in Milwaukee after emigrating from Germany in the 1930's.
After graduating from the University of Michigan, Sandy moved to Boston and obtained her master's degree in Special Education from Boston College. While attending Boston College, Sandy was a teacher for the blind in the Boston Public Schools. Sandy became a teacher for students who had various disabilities from pre-school through college. Later, she did research and writing for teachers and parents in the Head Start program, and taught in numerous colleges in the Boston area. For the last 14 years, she was the Director of Disability Services at Tufts University.
Sandy and her husband have been residents of Winchester for 33 years, where her children attended the public schools.
Sandy was actively involved in the Muraco and McCall parents associations and was a long term board member of the Winchester Multicultural Network. She was a founding member of Temple Shir Tikvah in Winchester. Sandy led a life filled with dignity, laughter, love and happiness. She relentlessly and bravely fought cancer for 16 years.
Services were held on Friday, June 8th and she was laid to rest at Wildwood Cemetery in Winchester.
