ATHOL - Howard E. Aiken, 84, of 437 Lenox St., died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006 at the Quabbin Valley Healthcare.
He was born in Athol, April 21, 1921, a son of John and Elizabeth (Wood) Aiken. He lived in Athol all of his life, graduating from Athol High School in 1939. He was in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, serving with the 1043rd Air Material Squadron.
As a youth Howard was a member of the "Tiger Club" at the Athol Area Y.M.C.A., played outfield on the Athol High School 1938 Western Mass Baseball Championship Team, playing at Fenway Park for the State Championship, and was co-captain of his high school basketball team. He was a member of the Hawley Softball Team, Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church and attended Braden River United Methodist Church during the winter months where he resided for 19 years. He was a member of the Ellinwood Country Club, the Horseshoe Cove RV Park Golf League in Bradenton, FL, and enjoyed square dancing.
He and his wife enjoyed traveling and had visited many places throughout the world and United States, especially enjoying Hawaii.
He worked for the L.S. Starrett Company for 27 years until his retirement. His first job during high school was an usher at the former York Theater and after returning from World War II, he owned and operated the Koffee Kup donut business for several years.
His wife of 57 years, Jean (Renwick) Aiken, died in 2003. He leaves a son, Kevin Aiken and his wife, Nancy, of Athol; a daughter, Candace Whitmer and her husband, Peter, of Princeton; two grandchildren, Ryan Aiken and his fiancee, Katie Dodge, of Chicopee, and Aaryn Aiken of Athol; a sister, Evelyn Fregeau of Port Chorlotte, FL., a brother-in-law, Robert Anderson, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Marilyn Maroni.
Private funeral services will be at Higgins-O'Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main St. with the Rev. Dr. R. Lee Smith, pastor of the Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church officiating. There are no calling hours and burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery.

The American flag was folded by Glenn Frenette, Commander, and Dave Chapman, Jr., Vice Commander, representing the American Legion Post 102. The flag was presented to Mr. Aiken's son Kevin by Glenn Frenette. A reception followed at the Ellinwood Country Club.
