George Adams, 63, president of the Adams Sponging Corp. of Boston, a textile processing company, died of cancer Sunday in Beth Israel Hospital.
A longtime Newton resident, he was a fourth generation president of his company founded in 1896.
Mr. Adams was a member of the Pine Brook Country Club of Weston, where he was on the board of governors.
A former president of the Joshua Loth Liebman Chapter of B'nai B'rith, he also was a life member of the Boston Aid to the Blind and of the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for the Aged.
A member of Temple Emanuel in Newton, he was involved in campaigns for the Combined Jewish Philanthropies and Israel bonds.
Mr. Adams graduated from Brookline High School in 1938 and and was a staff sergeant in the Marine paratroopers in the Pacific theater during World War II.
A noted tennis player as a youth, he had been state tennis champion at Brookline High in the late 1930s and played in a number of championship matches across the state and nation. Among them was the national doubles at the Longwood Cricket Club. He and his sons, Leonard (Chipp) and Jeffrey (Buckey) Adams had been ranked nationally in father-and-son tennis.
He was past president of the Newton Squash and Tennis Club, and of the Israel Tennis Center.
Besides his sons, he leaves his wife, Laura (Weiss); a sister, Jane Lazar, and a grandson.
A funeral service will be held in Levine Chapel, Harvard street, Brookline, today at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Sharon Memorial Park.
