David Alfond, passed away unexpectedly in New York City on December 1, 2007, at age 91, born December 25, 1915, in Lynn, MA.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cathy.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dolores; and adored children, Brenda (Jack), Steven (Elaine), and Michael (Barbara). He was a devoted grandfather to Matt, Todd, Hannah, Brandon, and Rachel and doting great-grandfather to Parker and Braden.
David was a World War II Veteran, having served with distinction in Europe. After the war, he devoted his entire professional career to shoe manufacturing. David was universally respected for his broad knowledge of the shoe industry and his meticulous attention to detail. A principal of the Dexter Shoe Company at its inception, David later moved to Puerto Rico, where he founded the Pan Am Shoe Company, overseeing 400 employees. David possessed a true wanderlust. He spent his early retirement years traveling the globe with Dolores and Michael and immersed himself in continental culture while living in France for three years. In 1979, David and family returned to the United States, settling in Bellevue, Washington to live in proximity to one of his sisters and nephew. He quickly became a devoted volunteer at the Hopelink Food Bank, applying his managerial skills and warm personality to this worthwhile cause. He devoted himself with equal zeal to exercise. As a charter member of the Bellevue Athletic Club, David maintained a three time per week workout regimen into his 91st year of life and was an inspiration to club members of all ages. He will be profoundly missed by his extended family in Maine and Massachusetts as well as by all those he charmed with amusing anecdotes and that twinkle in his eye.
