John J. Gilmartin, 87, Nokomis, FL, died Feb. 19, 2003. He was born Oct. 1, 1915, in Worcester, Mass, and came to Nokomis in 1997 from East Norwich, NY.
He was a physical education teacher and coach for 37 years in collegiate schools in New York City and taught at Oyster Bay and Wyandanch public school systems in New York. He was the director of Camp Cedar Isles, Fourth Lake and Eagle Bay, all camps in the Adirondacks, for 10 years.
He was a graduate of DePaul University and earned his master's degree from Columbia Teachers College. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Melinda; a niece, Diane Laviolette; and nephews Paul Laviolette and Garry.
A memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice. Burial will be in Palmer, Mass. Farley Funeral Home, Venice, is in charge. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. Published in Herald Tribune on Feb. 21, 2003
