Edith Carolyn (Borrebach) Aldrich, of Falmouth, died May 11.
Born in New York City, she grew up in Medford and married Boston attorney Merritt James Aldrich in 1939. Fourteen years after the death of her husband in 1965, she married Francis Crosby Whitehead, and for the past 30 years has lived in Barnstable Village.
In the late 1940s, she established and directed the Child's Garden School for ages 3-6 in Holliston. Upon earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Extension Studies from Harvard University in 1970, and a Master of Arts in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1973, she studied Religion and Pastoral Counseling at Andover Newton Theological School. She taught numerous English and writing courses in the Boston area and on Cape Cod, as well as Communications at Cape Cod Community College from 1978 to 1983.
Edith Aldrich was an active member of Phi Delta Kappa, Harvard and Radcliffe Clubs, American Association of University Women, Manuscript Club of Boston, Twelve O'Clock Scholars (for writers), the Cape Cod Writers' Conference, and Cape Cod Art Association. Her interests were deep and wide-ranging, from singing in the Chatham Chorale, teaching Hatha Yoga, pencil and ink drawing, contributing to writers' conferences, to exploring the natural and social worlds from Lapland to South Africa.
She leaves three children; a sister, ; a brother; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
