Frank James Amaro, Sr., 84, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011 at Davis Healthcare Center in Wilmington, NC.

He was the son of Antonio Ferreira Amaro and Virginia (Mello) Amaro of Peabody, MA who were immigrants from Portugal.

Frank proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Navy and then graduated from Boston College with a BS in Biology. He later went on to become a successful business owner of Agawam Auto and Marine in Ipswich, MA. Of his many interests, Frank enjoyed spending time with his children, especially watching his sons play football for the Ipswich High Tigers. He was very active in local politics and was a member of the Ipswich School Board, 1964 through 1968 and was President of the Ipswich Rotary Club, 1968. After retirement he loved traveling through Portugal with his wife Hattie Amaro. Frank also became passionate about cooking and golf and frequently enjoyed both activities in more recent years. He is preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Hattie Emma (Safstrom) Amaro and wife of 4 years, Janet Mattieson Amaro.

Frank is survived by his four children, Stefany Rhodes and her husband Jay of Bayfield, CO., Jessica Wheeler and her husband Edward of Bristol, R.I., Frank Amaro, Jr. and his wife Diana of Albuquerque, NM and Peter Amaro and his wife Nina of Ipswich, MA. He is also survived by his 8 grandchildren Jesse Rhodes, Stephanie, Ned and Maggie Wheeler, Anna and Aja Amaro and Peter and Emily Amaro. A private family service will be held in Ipswich, MA.
