Mertin Willard Bennett, 99, Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Shullsburg, passed away Oct. 20, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque.

He was born May 2, 1911 on a farm adjacent to the south village limits in Black Earth, the son of Charles and Lillian (Guldemann) Bennett. Mertin graduated from Black Earth High School in May 1929 and in 1932 from Wisconsin Mining School, now known as UW-Platteville. He worked on a farm and at Clyman Canning Company during his summer vacations. In 1933, Mertin worked in a gold mine in Alma, Colo. He worked for the Dane County Highway Department in 1934 and for the Wisconsin State Highway Department from 1935 until 1939. Mertin was united in marriage to Marie Schlosser of Spring Green on Oct. 28, 1937; she preceded him in death on Nov. 2, 1959 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Dodgeville. From 1941 until 1944, during World War II, Mertin was employed as a construction engineer. In May 1944 he worked as a sales engineer for Nagle-Hart Equipment Company, the local Caterpillar dealer.

Mertin was united in marriage to Kathleen Curran Millard of Houston, Texas, in 1965. In 1967, he worked as highway commissioner for Iowa County. Mertin also worked for Drott Tractor Company as a sales representative in Milwaukee from 1969 until his retirement in November 1974.

He served on the Lafayette County Board from April 1978 until his retirement from the board in 1988. After Mertin's retirement they moved to Shullsburg, and in 2008 they moved to Assisi Village in Dubuque.

Mertin was a member Cole Acres Golf Course in Cuba City. He enjoyed hunting, golfing, fishing, playing cards and traveling. He continued golfing and driving until the age of 98-and-a-half.

Mertin is survived by his wife, Kathleen; two daughters: Susan (Harold Morgan) Bennett, Albuquerque, N.M.; Sheila (friend Chuck Munyon) Trotter, Platteville; and one sister-in-law, Leah Bennett, Land O'Lakes. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marie; one son, Craig Charles Bennett, on Feb. 28, 2008; and one brother, Harris Guldemann Bennett.
