SHULLSBURG, Wis. -- John L. Allendorf, 83, of Shullsburg, passed away Monday, May 18, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 21, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Shullsburg. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military honors will be accorded. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Furlong Funeral Home, Shullsburg, where there will be a scripture wake service at 3:45 p.m. Friends also may call after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.

He was born on Oct. 30, 1925, in Menominee, Ill., son of John and Anna (Miller) Allendorf. He married Vivian March on Nov. 6, 1943, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Galena.

John enlisted in the Navy on Jan. 7, 1944, and served in Africa, Italy, Sicily and France until his honorable discharge in 1946.

Prior to joining the Navy, he worked on the construction of the Julien Dubuque Bridge. John spent a majority of his life farming until 1976, at which time he went to work for Kelly-Springfield in Freeport, where he retired in 1988.

John enjoyed good conversation, time spent with his family and a good cup of coffee. He will be sadly missed.

Surviving are his wife; his children, Diane (Charlie) Copeland, of Byron, Ill., Delores Harty, of Pecatonica, Ill., Ruth (Al) Marino, of Cape Coral, Fla., Dennis (Carol) Allendorf and Donald (Carolyn) Allendorf, both of Shullsburg, Kathy (Terry Staufacher) Allendorf, of Monroe, Janet (Tom) Bussan, of Galena, Sue (Pete) Paquette, of Shullsburg, and Dick (Lori) Allendorf, of Darlington; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Allendorf, of Cuba City; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a brother, Jerry (Pauline) Allendorf; a sister, Mary (Charles) Schultz, both of Galena; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David; a brother, Kenneth "Pete" Allendorf; two sisters, Betty Schultz and Patti Bruns; and two sisters in infancy, Rita and Darlene.
