According to Martin's History of Door County (1881), Frank and his brothers, Ernst and Robert, operated the first sawmill and blacksmith shop under the name Bernhardt Bros. in Forestville, Door Co., Wisconsin. Holand's History of Door County (1916) tells more about the building of that first sawmill.
Nov. 1, 1916. Door County News. Frank Bernhardt Obituary. ...He was born in Neisse, province of Silesia, Germany, July 18, 1833 and resided in his native land until early manhood. His father having died, his mother and her three sons, Robert, Frank, and Julius came to this country, leaving their native land and settling in Sheboygan in November of the same year. They lived at that place two years, later moving to what is now Forestville. In 1856 Mr. Barnhardt was united in the holy bonds of wedlock to Theresa Machinsky, who passed away 18 years ago. Following their marriage they lived in Ahnapee, Kewaunee county for a few years, later returning to Forestville.
