Virginia Faye Almquist of Frederic died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at her home with her family. She was 81 years old.
She was born in her rural Luck home of parents, Rex and Bertha Cruthers, on June 4, 1922. She was educated at Laketown Grade School and then Luck High School, graduating in 1940, then continuing there one year post-grad business study.
She worked in the Luck Bank until January 31, 1945, when she married Russell Almquist, a U.S. Marine from Lewis. They lived in New York City, N.Y., until 1947. She was working in a bank while he finished his service time. They returned to live and work in Frederic and Siren.
Virginia worked in the Frederic Bank as well as the Stokely Van Camp office until 1970, when they moved to Dallas, Texas. She worked at the American Bank there until retirement, when they returned to a summer home at Siren and wintering in McAllen, Texas. She moved to Frederic year-round in 1997.
Virginia was an active member of St. Luke's Methodist Church in Frederic, the Siren American Legion Auxiliary, volunteer for American Red Cross Blood Bank and longtime blood donor.
Her hobbies were gardening, reading, needlework and coffee with her friends. She also enjoyed traveling, seeing new places and meeting new people.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband in 1990.
She is survived by her son, Jerry (Jana) of Granbury, Texas; her daughter, Jeanne (Steve) Johnson of West Lafayette, Ind.; her brother, Max (Lois) Cruthers of Luck; sister-in-law Shirley Bloom of Siren; five grandchildren, Brian Almquist of Kansas City, Mo., Jason Almquist of Granbury, Texas, Michelle Maher of California, Mike and Joe Maher of Duluth, Minn.; eight nieces, one nephew; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
Services were held at St. Luke's Methodist Church, Frederic on Wednesday, Sept. 17, with Pastor Richard Huthison officiating. Burial was at Lewis Cemetery. Luncheon was provided at St. Luke's Fellowship Hall following services.

I met Virginia through my mother Florence Almquist Pittelkow. She was a wonderful, talented and loving person. I believe my mom was a cousin to Virginia's husband Russell.
