Francis Wilder Ackert, 88, of 1018 Mansfield St., Chippewa Falls, who taught instrumental music and directed bands in Chippewa Falls schools from 1945 to 1977, died suddenly Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Chippewa Falls.

He was born May 3, 1914, to Ella (Payton) and Earl Ackert in Ellendale, N.D. In 1935, he earned a bachelor of arts degree and teaching certificate from the Ellendale Normal College, a school that was founded by his father, Earl Ackert.

On June 8, 1940, he married Helen M. Haskell in Moorhead, Minn. He taught school in several communities in North Dakota and Minnesota until 1945, when they moved to Chippewa Falls. During his 32 years of service at Chippewa Falls Junior High School and Middle School and three years at McDonell High School, he imparted the joy of music to more than two thousand young people, some of whom followed in his footsteps and went on to careers in music. Toward the end of his career, many of them were the children of his former students. On the occasion of his retirement, a music scholarship fund was established in honor of Francis Ackert and Howard Elliott, who was director of the Chippewa Falls High School Bands for the same span of years.

Ackert was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Chippewa Falls for 57 years, where he served on the Session, sang in the choir, and performed many volunteer services. He was also a member of the Wisconsin Bandmasters' Association.

He is survived by: two sons, Stephen (Golnoush) Ackert of Annandale, Va., and Alan (Sunny) Ackert of Minneapolis, Minn.; one brother, Floyd Ackert, of Palatine, Ill., and three grandsons, Julian, Ramin, and Justin Ackert.

He was preceded in death by: his wife on July 19, 1995; his parents; and two brothers, Hugh and Howard Ackert.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at Central Lutheran Church, Chippewa Falls, with the Rev. Dr. Barry Boyer of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow the service at Forest Hill Cemetery, Chippewa Falls.

Friends may call from 12:00 noon until the time of service Thursday at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel, Chippewa Falls.

Gifts in lieu of flowers may be made to the Ackert-Elliott Scholarship Fund.
