Evert L. Bible, 90, of Lafayette, passed away at 10:15 p.m. on Monday, August 26, 2013 at St. Anthony Healthcare. Born October 9, 1922 in Ochelata, OK, he was the only child born to Evert and LoSitah (Tyner) Bible. He was a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. Evert left school as a senior in 1940 and went into the Army where he drove an ambulance. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1943 and then went to the Air Force where he was appointed, by the President to be a glider pilot. He attended College in Hayes, Kansas for glider pilot training and graduated as a Flight Officer. He was discharged from the Air Force as a Flight Officer. Evert played football for the Air Force. He received his honorary high school diploma in 2002 from Caney Valley High School in Ramona, OK.
Evert married Emma Faye Sweazy on April 27, 1944 in Jeffersonville, IN, and she survives. He began his career with the railroad in 1947 with the L & N Railroad, then went to work with the Wabash Railroad, and retired after 30 years as footboard yardmaster with the Norfolk and Western Railroad in 1981. He attended Stockwell United Methodist Church. He enjoyed participating in all sports, especially golf and coaching softball. He did a lot of volunteer coaching at Lauramie High School and in the Summer Recreation Programs.
Surviving with his wife are their five children: Evert Bible, Jr. (wife, Diane) of West Lafayette, Tonto Bible (wife, Beth) of West Point, Sequoyah Bible (wife, Julie) of Lafayette, Tanya Johnson (husband, Ron) of South Carolina, and Claude Bible of Oklahoma, 15 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
