John F. Appleton, age 92, Logansport, passed away at 6:27 p.m. on Friday, November 28, in Logansport Memorial Hospital.

Born July 17, 1922, in Cass County, he was the son of W. Earl and Melvina ”Emma” Baumgardner Appleton.

On July 8, 1949, in Logansport, he was married to Carolyn Wade, who survives.

John retired in 1980 as a locomotive engineer for the Pennsylvania Railroad, after 40 years of service.

A 1940 graduate of Washington Township High School, he was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church.

John was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3790.

John Frederick loved life and lived it well. He enjoyed gardening and roses, playing cards and cribbage, feeding the birds and the squirrels, and caring for stray cats. He loved his family and had many lifelong friends. He smiled, sang and laughed easily. He was forever hopeful of winning the lottery. Most of all he was in love with his wife of 65 years.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Jeffrey W. (Connie) Appleton, Logansport; daughters, Rebecca (David) Einhaus, Port Orchard, WA, and Beverly (Steve) Fissel, Seattle, WA; seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

One half-brother and four sisters preceded him in death.

The funeral will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, at Kroeger Funeral Home. The Rev’d. Chuck Compton will officiate.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, also at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Walton IOOF Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cass County Humane Society.
