Mrs. Matilda Leighty

Mrs. Matilda Brown Leighty, one of the oldest and most highly esteemed women of Benton county, died at 10:40 o'clock Thursday night at the family residence, three miles north-east of Otterbein. She had been in a feeble condition for some time and her demise is attributed to the infirmities of age. She was born near Pond Grove March 12, 1835, and when she was two years old she went with her parents to Half Way. She had lived in the same neighborhood for seventy-nine years and was the last of her family to pass away. She was a pioneer settler of Benton county and her husband died many years ago. She was the daughter of Wendell and Nancy Brown, pioneer settlers of Warren county. Deceased was an earnest member of the United Brethren church at Otterbein for many years and her religion was exemplified by her daily life. She was a women of beautiful character and during her long life was the author of many kind deeds. She was greatly devoted to her home and family, and her memory will long be revered by those her knew her best. She is survived by three daughters and one son: Miss Nancy B. Leighty and Mrs. Mary M. Peters, of Otterbein; Mrs. C. W. Timmons, of Morocco, and George W. Leighty, of Otterbein. She also leaves twelve grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a number of nephews and nieces. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the U. B. church at Otterbein, Rev. Taylor officiating. Interment in the Shambaugh cemetery.
