Birth: May 4, 1964
Death: Jun. 28, 1982

An 18-year-old Fairmount youth, James Alexander, Jr. 321 S. Penn St., died at 4 p.m. Mon., June 28, when he fell into the Mississinewa River near the covered bridge at Matthews. Alexander and Charles Marley, 18, 320E 1050S, Fairmount, were fishing near the base of the old dam east of the bridge when Alexander, who was standing on the dam's base, slipped into the water and was pulled under by the swift current. Marley, who was sitting on the north bank, tried unsuccessfully to reach Alexander with a stick. He then yelled at two Gaston residents, Darrell and Rodney Johnson, searching for raspberries nearby, who notified authorities by radio. Members of the Matthews and Upland fire depts., state troopers, Grant County Sheriff's deputies and civil defense workers searched for 7 hours before the body was recovered at 10:32 p.m. within 100 to 200 feet of where he fell into the water. Alexander was graduated from Madison-Grant High School in May. Grant County Coroner David Devine ruled the death accidental drowning. A native of Logansport, Alexander had lived in Fairmount most of his life. He had recently enlisted in the army. He was a member of the Separate Baptist Church, Fairmount. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James B. (Sharon) Alexander, Fairmount; 2 brothers, Michael and Schawn, and one sister, Michelle, all at home; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John J. Fettig, Logansport and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. D.B. Alexander, Orestes, Ind. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thurs., July 1, at the Hunt Funeral Home with Rev. Roy Tomlin officiating. Burial was in Park Cemetery.
