Timothy Alan Atha, M.S.
1967-2006
Timothy Alan Atha M.S., age 39, passed away on November 11, 2006 at Northwestern Hospital, following a gallant six year battle with protracted illness and pain issues from paraplegia. A 1987 graduate of Valparaiso High School, Tim received a B.S. degree in psychology from Ball State University. After becoming paraplegic in April of 1989, Tim, as a leader, became president of the Disabled Students Association; Captain of the disabled basketball team; and initiated a Disabilities Day on campus. At Tim's encouragement, the president of Ball State University agreed to be in a wheelchair for that day. Respect for diversity and caring insight led Tim to attain a Master's Degree in Multicultural Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology. He also pursued a doctorate and was within one year of his goal when he became ill. Tim received many scholarships and was lauded for his work with "runaways" in Los Angeles.
Timothy, "Buckwheat" loved to snow ski and hoped to be on the Olympic Ballet Ski Team. Post-paralysis, he snow and water skied, enjoyed Bungee Cord Jumping and was in the Demolition Derby at the Porter County Fair. He was active in Narcotics Anonymous and was an advocate for a Methadone Clinic in Valparaiso. Tim attended Faith United Methodist Church in Wanatah. Throughout his illness, his unusual spirit and belief in God carried him through many difficult times.
Timothy leaves the cherished memory of his parents, Dr. Alan Atha and Gail R. Ofte-Atha; his sister, Kjersten (Matt) Croke; their four children Tyler, Patrick, Rory and Jack; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, LaVerne and Elizabeth Atha; Sverre and Ingeborg Ofte.
Visitation will be on Friday November 17, 2006 at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Road, Valparaiso , IN from 4-8 p.m. Rev. Grayson Atha and Pastor Dee Miller will preside at services to be held at Faith United Methodist Church, 15555 S. 900 W, Wanatah, IN on Saturday, November 18, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be given to Faith United Methodist Church and Narcotics Anonymous, 257 W. Indiana Ave. Suite Bl. 1 46383. moellerfuneralhome.com
Timothy considered his only handicap to be his inability to walk upstairs. We give thanks he is free from pain and now soars as if with eagles (Isaiah 40:31). While he was among us, he touched many lives; now that he is with God's Angels, his courageous spirit lives on in our hearts!
