Paul was the son of the late David N. and Matilda (Kresley) Abbott.
He was a 1941 graduate of Forest High school, Forest, Ind. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was in Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He received the American Theater EAME with two bronze stars, Good Conduct Ribbon, Purple Heart, and World War II Victory Medal. He was Tech 4 Grade. He graduated from Tech School, Brooke General Hospital. He Married Molly F. "Peg" Barnett on November 24, 1959. He retired from Nickel Plate Railroad and Abbott's lettering and bowling supplies. He was a city building inspector for Marion. He enjoyed bowling; he was the secretary of the Ed merchant bowling league for many years. He also enjoyed coin collecting and going to church. Mr. Abbott was a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church and served as secretary there for 11 years. He was also a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife Peg; children, Greg N. Abbott, Royal Center; Terry S. Abbott, Logansport; step-child Ronald Lee (Ede) Pence, Mt. Sterling, Ky.; thirteen grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son Paul D. Abbott Jr., brother, Lewis Franklin Abbott; Sisters, Ruby Pauline Long, Cecil Elizabeth Schimmel, Lucille Mildred Redman, Elsie Blanch Parker, and Bessie Mae Allen.
