Alfred Ray Bridegroom, Franklin township young man twenty-one years of age, was drowned in Bass lake Monday evening about 7:30 o'clock, when a motor boat capsized. The boat is owned by Ernie Small of Knox, who was operating it. Accompanying him were Alfred Bridegroom and his brother Walter; also Claude Zirkle and Floyd Foust, both of Knox. The vessel upset near the state bathing beach, as it was making a turn in waves thrown by another boat. The five occupants were thrown into the water. All except Alfred Bridegroom were able to hold onto the boat until another rescued them, but Alfred sank out of sight. When the body was recovered Tuesday afternoon, a skull fracture was discovered. This was taken to indicate that some portion of the boat, presumably the windshield, struck him on the head at it overturned, perhaps causing unconsciousness.
Alfred was a son of Ira Bridegroom and the late Carrie Ballinger Bridegroom. Born Feb. 26, 1927, he spent all of his life in the home community. He served in the Army during 1945 and '46, most of that time with a cavalry unit in Japan. Recently he has been employed with a construction crew working on electric lines near North Judson. Surviving, besides father and step-mother, are brothers Francis of Wabash, Walter of Knox, Arthur of Francesville and Albert of Winamac; one sister Mrs. Charles Hartwick of Winamac. The remains were taken yesterday from the Fry & Lange mortuary to the family home. Funeral services were set for this (Thursday( afternoon at the Methodist church, the Rev. Ralph McCormack of Royal Center officiating. Burial is to be in Franklin Center cemetery.
