John married Susanna Hower on Mar 9, 1837 in Champaign Co., OH. They had seven children (plus an infant that died at birth):

John Baker Sr., and Susan (Hower) Baker were natives of Pennsylvania. When they were children, they moved with their parents into Ohio, where they grew up and were married. John Baker Sr., was a cooper by trade and worked at the business until the end of his life in 1853. John Baker Sr., and his wife, Susan, came to Wells County about the year 1850. John Baker Sr., and Susan had eight children: Sarah, Lydia, Mary A., Elizabeth, John Jr., Jacob, Martin, and an infant who died at birth.
John Baker, Jr., attended the public schools of Jackson Township in Wells County, Indiana, until he was 18 years of age. He then enlisted in the army, becoming a member of Company E 75th Regiment Indiana Volunteers, December 6, 1863, and remained in the service of his country until the close of the war, being discharged, therefore, in August 1865. He was with Sherman in the great battle from Atlanta to the sea. After his return, he began to work at the carpenter's trade. He married Mollie (Hudson) Baker on October 31, 1874, in Wells County, Indiana. Her parents were Benjamin Hudson and Katie Ann (Mullen) Hudson. At one time, John Baker, Jr., owned two hundred and sixty-nine acres in Jackson Township which also supported 14 oil wells. He was engaged as a stock farmer and general farming. John Jr. and wife (Mollie) were members of the Christian Church. Mr. Baker was a member of the Masonic Lodge #246 in Warren, Indiana. Mr. Baker was a registered Democrat.
In 1896, he built the house that Sharon and Claire McMillan live in now. He constructed the barn in 1901. The farm has been in the Baker family, or heirs, for over a hundred years. From the marriage of John Jr. and Mollie, three children were born: James W., born May 23, 1876, married Anna Good, They had three girls, Maxine, Helen, and Inez. Oscar E. was born November 29, 1883, and was married to Meda Click. No children were born to this union.
Benjamin Franklin (Frank) was born September 23, 1879, and married Mary Hannah Hayward. Frank was an oil pumper and a farmer. Mr. Baker built all new buildings on the farm where he lived. The gravel for the cement block house was from the river bottom which he owned. Four children were born to the marriage: Ethel, Hazel, Mildred, and Howard E.
Howard E. graduated from International Business College and went to Oklahoma to work in the oil fields. Upon returning to Indiana, he married Vernis A. (Custard) on July 21, 1934. Vernis was the daughter of A. Bert Custard and Nettie (Coffield) Custard.
Two daughters were born to this union. Lennyce E. (Baker) Powers was born on April 3, 1946. Lennyce is married to Laurence (Larry) Powers and resides at Greenwood, Indiana. She is a school teacher at the Perry Meridian High School. They have one daughter, Emily. Sharon K. (Baker) McMillan was born on March 10, 1943. Sharon is married to Claire T. McMillan. Sharon is rural mail carrier out of Warren Post Office. They have two daughters: Clarice, graduated from Ball State University in May, 1990; Kristi is a student at Ball State University.
Mr. Baker was trustee for Jackson Township, Wells County. He was the first school board member from Jackson Township in the consolidation of Southern Wells School Corp. Mr. Baker is a member of Masonic Lodge #246 in Warren, Indiana. He is also a member of Congregational Christian Church (now United Church of Christ) in Warren. Vernis is a member of the McNatt Methodist Church.
