Richard Dale "Butch" Shidler, 71, died at 10:56 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2011, in his Oxford home.
Born June 10, 1939, in Lafayette, he was the son of the late Ray Shidler and Helen Kerker Shidler. He graduated from Montmorenci High School in 1957.
On Oct. 21, 1962, he married Ruth Brickler, in Montmorenci, and she survives.
Mr. Shidler farmed most of his life with his father and most recently worked for Kelly Construction at Tate & Lyle. He also played and coached softball for 30 years.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing euchre, gardening, spending time with his family, going to his grandchildren's activities, watching Purdue basketball and western movies.
Surviving with his wife are five daughters, Lisa McCann (husband: Tim) of Oxford, Lori Jackson (husband: Bob) of Naperville, Ill., Deb Shidler (friend: Karen) of Van Buren, Ark., Trina Martin (husband: Damon) of Boswell and Kristi Hoffert (husband: Mike) of Lititz, Pa.; two sisters, Helen Lester (husband: Dick) of West Lafayette and Mary Smith (husband: Jim) of Lafayette; and two brothers, Don Shidler (wife: Joan) of Otterbein and Jack Fleming (wife: Bonnie) of Mississippi.
Also survivingare 8 grandchildren. A brother, Joe Shidler, preceded in death. He enjoyed Christmas lights and telling jokes and stories.
Friends may call Friday, May 6, 2011, from 1 p.m. until time of service at 3 p.m. at Shoemaker Funeral Home, Otterbein. The Rev. Linda Sproull will officiate. Interment Asbury Cemetery.
