He was born August 27, 1935 in Rawlins, Wyoming, a son to Alfred and Mary (Garcia) Abeyta. Joseph attended schools in Rawlins and moved to Cheyenne in the early 1960's.
He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, camping and watching football.
Survivors include five sons, Vincent (Hope) Abeyta of Cheyenne; Steven Abeyta of Cheyenne; Ernest (Christina) Abeyta of Milliken, Colorado; Troy Abeyta of Rawlins; Anthony Abeyta of California; four daughters, Theresa (Joseph) Hernandez of Cheyenne; Linda Christine (Carlos) Salgado of Denver; Joyce (George) Trujillo of Denver; Victoria Abeyta of California; two brothers, Alonzo Abeyta of Colorado Springs, Colorado; James Abeyta of Rawlins; five sisters, Eleanor Pena of Glendale, Montana; Mabel Rodriguez of Rawlins; Betty Gonzales of Cheyenne; Joella Martinez of Cheyenne; Patsy Herrera of Cheyenne; 10 grandsons, 12 granddaughters, and numerous great and great great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his friend Helen Munoz of Cheyenne.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Joseph David Abeyta.
