G. H. APPLEGATE DIES IN COMA
_________________________________
FAILS TO REVIVE TO TELL OF ACCIDENT

George Henry Applegate, 75-year-old farmer living in the Woodsboro community, southwest of Hillsboro, died Monday evening, October 25, at 5 o'clock at his home, about three hours after he had been injured in an accident. No one saw the accident and Mr. Applegate did not regain consciousness before he died, to tell just what had occurred. It is believed, however, that as he walked from his home to that of a son, soon after 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, the runaway team, which belonged to Bert Paden, who lives on a nearby farm, passed him and in trying to stop the team, the 75-year-old farmer was fatally injured.

FOUND BY WIFE

The unconscious man was found by his wife not long after the accident. Neighbors helped take him home and a physician was called. He was found to be crushed about the chest and the head and he lay in a delirious condition and apparently in great pain, for three hours, growing gradually weaker until death ended his sufferings, about 5 o'clock.

FUNERAL WEDNESDAY

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Woodsboro M. E. church of which Mr. Applegate had been a member for fifty-four years. The services were in charge of the Rev. C. S. Tritt of Litchfield, assisted by the Rev. Alma McLain of Donnellson. Burial was made in Clear Springs cemetery in that neighborhood.

Born March 22, 1862, in Litchfield, and was a son of William and Caroline Applegate. At the time of his tragic death he was 75 years, 7 months and 3 days old. As a boy he lived for several years in Christian county and for four years after that in the state of New Jersey. The rest of his life was passed in the Woodsboro neighborhood.

On December 4, 1884, G. H. Applegate and Julia Frances Ferguson of this county were united in marriage. His wife survives him. They were the parents of five children, two of whom, Essie and Ruby, died in infancy. The surviving children are: Maude, the wife of Walter Stevens, and Roy Applegate, both of Hillsboro, and Ethel, the wife of Albert Durr, of Yuma, Ariz. He leaves also three brothers and two sisters, who are: Gordon Applegate of Wilsey, Kan.; Addison and Arthur Applegate of Hillsboro; Mrs. Rachel Alexander of Wichita, Kan., and Miss Susie Applegate of Hillsboro. One sister and four brothers preceded him in death. Eight grandchildren also survive, who are: Warren, Irene, Frances and Ruth Pierson of Yuma, Ariz.; Vera, Earl and Clara Applegate of Hillsboro, and Clarence Alexander of Litchfield.

Mr. Applegate's sudden death under such regrettable circumstances was a great shock to all who knew him. He was an active and progressive farmer for many years and leaves many friends in his home community.
