Dorothy H. Ahrens, 1340 D McNally Drive, Winona, died of natural causes on Monday, January 14, 2008, at Lake Winona Manor.
Dorothy was born January 27, 1923, to Joseph and Isabelle Schneider in Winona. Dorothy lived her entire life in Winona. She married Robert V. Ahrens on May 29, 1945. They were married for 62 years.
Dorothy was a graduate of Winona Senior High School. She worked at Goven's grocery store and later on at the A&P grocery store in downtown Winona. For years, Dorothy worked side-by-side with her husband, Robert, as owners of the Pure Oil Distributing Co., and later on as owners of the Winona Liquor Store in downtown Winona.
She and her husband enjoyed many years cheering their sons in their athletic activities. Rarely did they miss a game or activity. During retirement Dorothy and Robert enjoyed houseboating on the Mississippi and later on took up motorhoming and camping around the Winona area. Dorothy was very proud of her flowers and worked hard to keep her yard colorful and beautiful. She was a devoted Minnesota Twins fan and never missed a game on television. A great day was tending her flowers and following it up with a Twins game at night. Dorothy had been a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and had made her peace with God.
She is survived by her husband, Robert, of Winona; sons, William (Cindy Bambenek), John (Cindy), and Gary (Renae), all of Winona; grandchildren, Jeremy (Niki), Jenny (fiancee, Nate), and Bethany; and stepgrandchildren, Cory, Wenonah, and Lydia. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Ruth, Helen and William.
Dorothy's family would like to thank all of the wonderful staff at Lake View Court who made her last remaining months pass with dignity and caring.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, January 17, at Martin-Myhre Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-3 p.m. Thursday at Martin-Myhre Funeral Home.
The family would appreciate, in lieu of flowers, memorials directed to Lake Winona Manor.
She will be greatly missed by her husband and family, but we have peace knowing she lived a very happy and contented life.
