Emma was the daughter of Aase Tallevsdatter Kiland.

She had six half-siblings: Tilda, Gilmer Bennett, Mabel Georgina, Ella, Alma Johanne, and Edwin Theodore Gunderson.

Emma married Kristian Bur Berntsen Skaraas on November 21, 1906.

They were the parents of three daughters: Blanche Christina, Alice Elizabeth, and Esther Irene.

Emma Benson 1883-1971

Mrs. Emma Marie Benson, 88, passed away at the Clearwater Memorial Hospital in Bagley, Saturday, April 17th. Mrs. Benson was a long time resident of the Leonard community and had made her home at the Good Samaritan Home in Clearbrook the past months.
Mrs. Benson was born March 2, 1883 in Nielsville, Minnesota to parents Elling and Aase Gulbranson. As a youngster, the family moved to the Fosston area where Mrs. Benson was confirmed and baptized in the Lutheran Faith. She was married to Christ Benson in Devils Lake, North Dakota, November 21, 1906. The Benson's moved to Janesville, Minnesota and later to Upham, North Dakota. Mr. Benson passed away in 1917 and Mrs. Benson, with her three daughters, came to the Leonard Community where she operated the Hotel and Cafe for many years. She was a long time member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and active in its Ladies Aid. Survivors include three daughters: (Blanche) Mrs. Wayne Tyler of Homestead, Montana; (Alice) Mrs. Ed Wendland of Leonard, Minnesota and (Esther) Mrs. Elmer Gordon of Leonard. Two grandchildren and three great grandchildren survive and one brother: Gilmer Gulbranson of Leonard, Minnesota and two sisters: Mrs. E. B. Rankin of Medicine Lake, Montana and Mrs. Mabel Crosby of Rolla, North Dakota. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Mrs. Benson was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters and one brother.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 20th at 2 p.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Leonard. The Rev. Richard Larson of Clearbrook officiated with burial at the Norway Lake Cemetery under the direction of the Cease Funeral Home of Bagley.
