Obit: Alvin Ihan Backlund Jr., age 65, of Grand Rapids, Minn., died Monday, June 25, 2007 at Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital. Alvin was born in 1942 to Alvin Sr. and Aili Backlund in Nashwauk, Minn. Alvin grew up and attended schools in Grand Rapids, Minn. He attended Dunwoody Institute to be an electrician and was employed as an electrician for Spencer Electric in Minneapolis. Alvin was united in marriage to Ardis Nadine Kreger on June 15, 1963 in Golden Valley, Minn. He later moved to Bigfork, Minn. and then to the Grand Rapids area where he was employed with Blandin Paper Company for 29 years. Alvin was one of the founding member of the Swampsiders Snowmobile Club and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and IBEW Local out of Minneapolis. He was an avid deer hunter, loved fishing and the outdoors.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife Ardis; son, Adam; four sisters, Faith Alvina Backlund, Alice King, Dorothy Howe and Alma Behning.
He is survived by two sons, Alvin (Katieanne) Backlund III of Grand Rapids, Minn., Andrew (Andraya) Backlund of Minneapolis, Minn.; four sisters, Florence Schram of Duluth, Minn., Felicia (Louis) Paul of Hibbing, Minn., Beatrice (Dominic) Lucchinie of Roanoke, Va., Susan Murphy of Hill City, Minn.; one brother, David (Dianne) Backlund of Prior Lake, Minn.; two granddaughters, Marja Jo Backlund and Anne Nadine Backlund; one grandson, Justin Bender; one expected granddaughter, Aili Evelyn Backlund.
Services: Visitation will be Friday, June 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Rowe Funeral Home in Grand Rapids and will continue for one hour prior to the 10 a.m. Funeral Service on Saturday, June 30 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Grand Rapids, Minn. First Councilor of the Grand Rapids Branch Presidency, Dennis Hansen will officiate. Burial will be at Nashwauk Cemetery, Nashwauk, Minn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.
