LeRoy E. Hautala, 72, Bear River, passed away at the original family homestead in Bear River, on Thursday, October 15, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer for 10 years.

He followed through with his wish to live his last years on the farm. After 19 surgeries, diabetes and heart problems, his caring wife Carol, along with his special brother-in-law Mike Marsyla were at his side.

He was born in Duluth on March 7, 1937. He grew up on the family farm in Sturgeon Township and graduated from Bear River school, Alango High School, Hibbing Junior College and the University of Minnesota, (Minneapolis), with a Bachelor's Degree in Business. He was united in marriage to Carol Marsyla on March 18, 1961 at Mason City, Iowa. They lived in Minneapolis, LeRoy was employed at Lockheed-Martin in St. Paul for 38 years, retiring in 1999. He was a financial consultant for Lockheed-Martin, and traveled throughout the United States and other countries as a "trouble shooter" for the company. While living in Minneapolis, he was an active member of the Lake Nokomis Lutheran Church for 32 years. He served on its Board of Directors, Education Board, Membership Council, and supervised church youth groups on trips to West Virginia, assisting flood victims. After retiring, they lived in Hibbing for 10 years, while fixing up the old family homestead farm in Bear River, then moving there 2 years ago. He loved having friends over to the farm for coffee and reminiscing about old times. He was an ardent follower and backer of the both the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, along with being very knowledgeable in their lineup and statistics. LeRoy was and avid antique collector, and spent years "antiquing". Most of all he loved his family, especially his grandchildren most of all.

LeRoy is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Carol; children, Dale (Stephanie) Hautala of La Mirada, CA; and Gina (Todd) Zenk of Auburn, AL; 6 Grandchildren: Mathew, Jacob, and Lindsey Hautala and Madison, Michaela and Mason Zenk; 2 aunts, lma Salmi of Chisholm and Martha (John) Santanello in Florida; along with numerous cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Sylvia Hautala in 1999.

SERVICES: Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM Friday (Oct. 23nd) at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook, with a gathering of family and friends for one hour prior. Rev. Joey Bailey will be the officiant. Interment will be in the Morcom Township Cemetery.
