Another old Veteran Passes Away
John Shaffer Bartholomew was born in Pennsylvania in the year 1841.
He came to this state, with his parents, at the age of twelve years, and grew to manhood in the immediate vicinity. At the time of the Civil War he served his country faithfully. In the year of 1863 he was united to Mary Mathilda Walker, who preceed him in death in 1904 at the age of 57 years. After her death he made his home with his children until Jan. 25, 1920 when he was stricken with paralysis, which went to his heart and death followed at the age of 78 years, 5 months, 19 days.
He leaves to mourn his death: 7 children, 5 boys; Frank of Sandage, N.D., Fred of Brule, wis; Wendall of Sandstone, Emmet and Will of Mantorville, one son having preceded him in death in 1918. Four sisters: Mrs. Elizabeth Duggar, Lehigh, Iowa; Mrs. Emily Orcutt of San Francisco, California; Mrs. Addie Fahling, Fairmont; Mrs. Sarah Farnsworth, Minneapolis; two brothers, Daniel of West Concord and Henry of Mantorville; a large number of grand children, besides a host of friends. Funeral services were held at Milton and interment made in the Milton Cemetry, Pastor Wm. Martig officiating.
Those attending the funeral from away were Fred of Brule, Wis and Mrs. Sarah Farnsworth of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
