John William Lyman, 78, of rural Verndale, Minnesota, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
John William Lyman was born in Valley City, North Dakota, to Samuel Bradley Lyman and Myrtle Agnes (Togstad) Lyman on April 16, 1927. He was the oldest of eight siblings. He and his family moved to Verndale. He worked with his family on their farm until August 27, 1952, when he joined the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany as an MP where he met Betty Ortel at Neighbors Restaurant in Lanshut, Germany. After being honorably discharged from the Army on August 11, 1954, John brought Betty and her daughter Anna to the United States. They were married in 1957 and lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He and Betty divorced.
John, being a farm boy at heart, moved back to the open country he loved. He spent his time doing what he loved – working on old farm tractors and machinery. He loved having his family visit him and his grandchildren spent many summers and winters with him. John was a very outgoing person who had no trouble making friends. This led him to meet Betty Johnson, a very special woman in his life, with whom he spent much time. He enriched the lives of everyone he met, and as anyone who knew John will tell you, his favorite pastime was talking. His favorite topics were tractors, his time in the Army and farm stories from his childhood. At the time of his death, John was surrounded by the people he loved, his family.
John is survived by his daughter and her husband, Anna Theresa and O'Dwyer Ferguson Royal of St. Paul, Minnesota; his grandchildren, Anthony, Priscilla, Timothy, Christopher and Sylvia, all of the Twin Cities; his great-grandchildren, Lasean, Anthony, Elijah and Eliana; his sisters Doris Repasky of Wadena, Minnesota, Dorothy Schwartz and her husband Harold of Edina, Minnesota, Mary McDermott and her husband Allen of Colorado, and Shirley O'Brien and her husband Tom of Shoreview, Minne-sota; his brothers, Kenny and his wife Susan of South Dakota and Paul and his wife Darlene of Tennessee; also a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his father, mother, and younger sister, Eunice.
Funeral services were Sunday, April 2, 2006, at Oylen Alliance Tabernacle in Oylen, Minnesota, with Pastor Neal Malcore officiating. Elaine Dague served as pianist. Bill and Laurie Ness sang "In the Garden," "In the Sweet By and By," and "The Old Rugged Cross." Berg Nylund American Legion Post 456 of Sebeka, Minnesota, provided military honors.
