Arthur M. Aho, 92 of Tamarak, died Sunday, June 21, 2009 in the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth.

He was born on March 24, 1917 in Duluth to August and Edith [Erickson] Aho. Later that year the family moved to Tamarack where they purchased a farm. He attended the Nelson Lake School and the Tamarack School and graduated from McGregor High School in 1936.

In 1941 he enlisted in the Army and was assigned to A Battery 41st Field Artillery Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. During WWII he served in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, South France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Rome-Arno. He was discharged from the Army in 1945.

Art was married to Mary Oja on September 14, 1945 in Burien, Wash. They lived in Seattle where he worked for Puget Sound Power and Light as a lineman until 1951 when he and Mary bought his parents farm in Tamarack. He farmed there for 34 years until he retired in 1985.

He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and served on the church council for many years, was supervisor for Clark Township for 36 years and was a member of the McGregor VFW Post #2747. Art loved traveling, deer hunting with Tom, Shawn, Bryan and friend, Joe Clark. He also enjoyed bowling, going for drives, playing Shanghi Rummy, Cribbage and Bingo at the Villa.

Art was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; parents, August Aho and Edith Aho Hendrickson; step-father, Emil Hendrickson; brothers, Henry, Bill and Leonard Aho; sisters, Betty Holm, Ellen Resso, Julia Beckman and Alice Hietala and his nephew, Joey Tiili.

He is survived by his daughter, Sandy (Tom) Nistler of McGregor; sisters, Esther McGuire of Cromwell and Dorothy (Ray) Tiili of Duluth; granddaughter, Tia (Dan) Hayes of Bovey; grandsons, Shawn (Jenny) Nistler of Andover and Bryan (Heather) Nistler of McGregor; great-grandsons, Alexander, Isaac, Harrison, Luke and Logan Nistler and his special visitor at Villa Vista, 10 year old Erika Kosloski.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 25, 2009 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright. Burial was in the Lakeside Cemetery in Lakeview Township. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Villa Vista, St. Mary's Hospital and the Solvay Hospice House for the wonderful care they provided Art.
